Anna-Lee McCleod, of Ardgowan School, asks :-

How do the TV people know what the weather's going to do?

Jim Hickey, of One Network News Weather Centre, responded.

The TVNZ Weather Department receives its weather information from MetService in Wellington. Scientist there study satellite pictures, gather information from around the country, talk to other weather centres around the world by computer and fax, send up weather ballons, talk to other weather observers, and use shipping and aircraft reports.

Then they make up the forecasts for us. We use their predictions and write a clear simple story for our viewers. Our graphic artists draw up the maps in their computers. We also use weather pictures taken by our camera people up and down the country.
