Alice Moran of Queenstown asks :-

Why is that when I am standing still the Moon looks still, but when I am moving in a car the Moon looks like it is following me?

Alan Gilmore, an astronomer at the University of Canterbury's Mt John Observatory, responded.

Really the moon is keeping still in the sky, it is you that is moving. When you are moving the trees and hills are passing by, but the moon appears to stay in the same place because it is a lot further away. That makes it look as if the moon is following you.

The same thing happens with the sun. It also 'follows' you. But people take that for granted and don't think about it.

Bright stars and planets also seem to follow one, particularly when they are low in the sky . Most stories of UFOs following people and planes are caused by bright planets, usually Venus or Jupiter, low in the sky.
